What is Alzheimer’s disease?

It is a disease that takes over one’s memory loss, decreasing it as well as other mental functions too. It usually develops from Dementia. Often, we see this with those in their sixties and above; however, studies have indicated that more than two-hundred thousand people under the age of sixty-five have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

We have seen it in the movies and books, such as Still Alice, where a woman in her late forties starts experiencing memory loss and additional signs that, ultimately, results to early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Although this is seen in a form of media, such as the book and movie, both do indict early signs that commonly go undiagnosed in real life. Doctors have said that it is common for many to overlook these signs due to menopause, which can have similar symptoms.

That is why it is important for everyone in general to go their routine checkups, especially if someone in your family has Alzheimer’s disease. Some early signs of Alzheimer’s disease are:

  • MEMORY LOSS THAT DISRUPTS DAILY LIFE
  • CHALLENGES IN PLANNING OR SOLVING PROBLEMS
  • DIFFICULTY COMPLETING FAMILIAR TASKS AT HOME, AT WORK OR AT LEISURE
  • CONFUSION WITH TIME OR PLACE
  • TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING VISUAL IMAGES AND SPATIAL RELATIONSHIPS
  • NEW PROBLEMS WITH WORDS IN SPEAKING OR WRITING
  • MISPLACING THINGS AND LOSING THE ABILITY TO RETRACE STEPS
  • DECREASED OR POOR JUDGMENT
  • WITHDRAWAL FROM WORK OR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
  • CHANGES IN MOOD AND PERSONALITY

A-1 Home Care specializes in Alzheimer’s disease as well as other diseases that affect millions worldwide. Are your everyday meds putting you at risk of dementia?

A recent study has revealed a possible link between cognitive impairment (and dementia) and a laundry list of common pharmaceuticals used to treat the cold, blood pressure, depression and other conditions.  These drugs are classified as ANTICHOLINERGICS.  Their function includes prohibiting a chemical known as ACETYLCHOLINE from functioning correctly in our nervous system which can relieve bothersome symptoms of the respiratory, urinary and gastrointestinal variety.  Unfortunately, many drugs such as Dimetapp, Benadryl and Paxil make this list.  A new analysis took a look at 451 individuals, average age 73, 60 of which had been administering themselves anticholinergic drugs for at least 30 days.  Across the board, there was indication of reduced brain volume in areas connected to cognitive function as well as lower levels of glucose in part of the brain in participants who used anticholinergics.  While the study did not conclusively prove these medications were the cause of the findings, evidence is building to support the connection between these drugs and cognitive issues later in life.  Patients are encouraged to speak with their doctor regarding the risks of anticholinergic meds and any health concerns they may have.

What is dementia?

The trademark signs of dementia are recognized by the following criteria:

  • Diminished cognitive function
  • Memory loss

This condition can result in the loss of normal every day information such as names of family members, and the individual’s own home address.  Behavioral tell-tale signs also include:

  • Getting lost in familiar areas
  • Losing track of date or time
  • Repeating questions
  • Delusional behavior
  • Aggressive behavior

This disease is slow and progressive and can develop over a long period of time-this is evident in its stronger presence in seniors and the elderlyIf your loved one is beginning to show signs of this condition or you feel symptoms have already begun to set in, speak with their medical practitioner about what the appropriate course of action is.  All Alzheimer’s disease patients are different and no 2 sets of circumstances shall be the same.  Enlisting the assistance and guidance of a trained and experienced Alzheimer’s & Dementia care provider can make this transition much smoother.  Dealing with the changes in our loved ones as they begin to deal with this condition can be difficult-you do not need to go on this journey alone.  If only for a day or a few hours weekly, Short-Term Care or Respite Care can go a long way to easing stresses of these situations.

A-1 Home Care takes great pride in exceeding our client’s expectations by delivering personalized care and service with compassion and dedication. We are proud to be serving all of Los Angeles and Orange County.  Established in 1991, we are the home care agency of choice for doctors, social workers, case managers and discharge planners across Southern California.  State Licensed, bonded and insured; we also offer easy financing with affordable payment plans and terms.  Contact us today at (310) 657-8780 or (562) 929-8400 to learn more!

Culver City Arthritis Care: How Cartilage Begins to Wear Out

Tags

Helping HandsBy now, you’ve probably often heard that osteoarthritis (OA) is caused by normal wear and tear of the joints and that this degenerative joint disease is associated with seniors over age 65.  How, exactly, does cartilage wear out over time, and who is at risk?  In this article, A-1 Home Care will discuss the process, risks, and preventive ways to diminish OA progression in the event that your elderly loved one develops symptoms.

The Process

Osteoarthritis is defined as a degenerative disorder resulting from a biochemical breakdown of articular (hyaline) cartilage in the synovial joints, and a more modern view holds that OA involves the entire joint organ (Medscape, 2015).  Another online source describes OA as a disease caused by damage to the cartilage, which could mean three things:  a direct blow (from a heavy external force), prolonged periods of stress on the bones (very common in overweight individuals), and physical inactivity.

Who’s at Risk?

As you may have guessed from the previous paragraph, people who are at risk for osteoarthritis are those involved in high impact sports, who are overweight, and those who do not exercise regularly.  Other causes of OA include auto accidents or bad injuries resulting from a fall.  Generally speaking, the risk of OA grows with age, and about 70% of individuals with this disease are over age 70, while a smaller percentage (4%) in young populations (age 20 and over) have this inflammatory joint disorder.  It is more common in women than in men.

Ways to Prevent Osteoarthritis

Exercise, take care of your body, stretch before you do anything physically intense, drink lots of water and eat well.  These tips sound so basic, yet each year about 20 million new cases of OA are diagnosed, so this means that people don’t take their lifestyle seriously or they don’t think it could happen to them.  Ignoring signs and symptoms could lead to chronic disability, costing you millions of dollars in health care, not to mention daily pain, discomfort and distress.  Without companion caregivers around, seniors are less likely to exercise on their own due to the intense pain and inflammation in their joints.  Contrary to popular belief, exercise will strengthen the muscles around the joints and thus place less pressure on the affected joints when walking.  If you want to give your elderly loved one a gentle push, hiring a 24-hour caregiver will be the best gift you can give your loved one.

A-1 Home Care has viable financial options for you to choose from.  We are LA County’s preferred home care agency because of the excellence we deliver in our live-in and live-out senior care services.  Since its inception in 1991, A-1 Home Care has been serving seniors and their families with skill and compassion, and all our culturally diverse caregivers are prescreened, professional and highly skilled.  We are open 24 hours a day to serve you, and if you have a question or a need, you can call us and never worry about getting an answering machine.  Our live operators are on stand-by 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to address your concerns.  A-1 Home Care also accepts long-term care insurance and veteran benefits.
